Kilim Is Our Passion

Pronounced: kE-‘lEm

Kilim is a word of Turkish origin and denotes a pileless textile of many uses, produced by one of several flat weaving techniques. These techniques have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. They are woven like tapestries, without a knotted pile and the patterns are made from the coloured threads which are visible on both sides of the pieces.

The Sehna kilim (named after the Persian town of that name) follows the traditional Sehna knotted carpets in design. The Turkish kilims (Anatolian and Kurdish) usually consist of two or more strips woven together, whilst the Shirvan kilim is unusual in having diagonal bands of colour upon which are woven geometric designs similar to those found on Daghestan carpets. Traditional Merv kilims are also distinctive in that the bands of embroidered zig-zag colours run diagonally across the carpet instead of vertically or horizontally.

Filled with romance and culture, ancient heritage and tradition, our products allow our customers to express their personalities through owning and wearing these individual handcrafted kilim pieces.

About Us

We’re the Hall-Wilson’s; Tom and Laura (along with our son, Sidney and dogs Spud and Sprout) and we are the new owners of Nomad Ideas, since taking over from Pammie-Jane Farquhar in October 2021. We really are so excited to have the opportunity to build on the years of hard work that Pammie-Jane put in since founding Nomad Ideas some 20 years ago, back in 2002.

Nomad Ideas specialise in the design and sale of the finest kilim shoes, homewares and accessories, all of which are made using repurposed antique kilim rugs. We have built up an incredibly strong relationship with two Turkish families over the years, who continue to make and supply us with all of the goods that you see for sale today. They really are master artisans and have passed their secrets and techniques down through the generations - We take great pride in our relationship with them.

As an ethical company, we aim to ensure that the artisans who make our products always receive a fair price for their goods. Sustainability is also a key principle for us and our makers; as such, we seek to source products that are made sustainably using eco-friendly processes and materials (recycled kilim being at the heart of all our products).
